Thinking like a designer
João is a multidisciplinary designer, improviser, creative strategist, trainer, team manager and illustrator, often invited to speak on topics related to collaborative design, creativity, improvisation and customer experience (cx). He is an invited professor at IADE, the creative university, in the areas of strategic and collaborative design and is the founder of PapagaioLobo, a collaborative design laboratory that helps teams and individuals to reach their full collaborative and creative potential. He is an avid learner, Master in Design, combining formal and non-formal education, such as design thinking, improvisation theater, stage techniques and clown. Among many projects and agencies he was the communication director at EMEL (Lisbon Mobility Company) where he consolidated the growth of the GIRA brand (Lisbon bicycles), renewed the customer experience with a creative approach, contributing to positioning a historically hated brand as a relevant brand for the city. He was also the founding creative director of the portuguese Playboy magazine, awarded by the Society for News Design, in New York, for his elegant visual approach. In the recent past, João was an advisor to the Mayor of Lisbon on matters related to the city’s Brand and special projects (MadeOfLisboa, Hub Criativo do Beato or the connection between the city and the WebSummit) and along the way he designed and transformed many projects and teams. Considering himself curious about almost everything, he was a boy scout, skateboarder, rugby player and is a black belt in judo, blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, scuba diver, occasional surfer and devoted father of four.
CREATIVE COLLABORATION IS WORKING TOGETHER TOWARDS A COMMON GOAL.
© IMPROVIty Workshop
This workshop was designed to develop collaborative creativity. This means leadership through active listening and learning by example, it means accepting that mistakes happen, and applying various techniques – from improvisational theatre and design – towards improving communication and collaboration between peers and between teams.
Collaboration Design
Working with others to achieve a common goal is challenging, and defining a program that aligns all team members can be a relevant approach. Consensus and harmony are confused with collaboration because it seems the most obvious (and easy) path, but it actually limits the group’s potential for innovation. From the diversity of profiles, some positive tension is welcome to find the common and shared vision.
Think Like a designer
Discover how develop processes and strategies to create new paths in a structured and creative way. It’s popularized by “design thinking”, a way of solving problems through creativity, but it starts with an attitude. The way of thinking of a designer who drives the journey and learn from mistakes. This strategic design mindset is the application of traditional design principles to systemic problems that helps people and teams to design their own future.
Creative Customer EXPERIENCE
The Customer Experience (cx) It’s a great way to improve brand loyalty and it also benefits from a creative approach and parallel thinking to increase value and reduce extra costs by gathering valuable customer data to optimize their journeys and leading to positive customer experiences. This goes beyond interactions with the call center or support team, it’s the brand awareness and experience of interacting with every touchpoint in the customer journey.
STRATEGIC CREATIVITY
Creativity is transforming new ideas into reality. To effectively grow a business, reach the right audience or drive a brand forward, creativity needs to be relevant, engaging and worth people’s time. It needs to be strategic, which is a critical asset for business professionals to stand out from their peers and improve their ability to communicate the creative “why” within their organizations. Every business expert should understand the basics of the creative process.
positive FaTHERHOOD
As a father of four, João loves to talk about parenting as a shared process and how a dedicated father can assume his own role with the opportunity to be truly relevant in his children’s growth journey. There is good evidence to suggest that fathers significantly contribute develop the child’s emotional and behavioral self-regulation. Being warm, supportive, involved and engaged are characteristics that have proven to be important and will provide good tools for the childrens.
João’s approach is a steering system that preserves individual diversity, leveraging it as a way of working with others in an endlessly repeating weel. He named it The Creative Collaboration Loop.
